SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Okanagan Cultural Tour (2 hour program)
School tours begin with a 20 minute film about a young girl coming back to the Osoyoos Indian Reserve and her encounters with the spirit of Coyote.
First Nations interpreters guide students through the desert grasslands to a re-constructed Okanagan village. The Okanagan use of local plants and animals is explained and a hands-on artifact session allows the groups to examine traditional tools.
If time allows, classes attend a second Pit-house Theatre production relating the Chaptik story of how Coyote brought salmon to the Okanagan.
Snakes Alive (40 minute program)
The Okanagan is home to seven species of snakes, many which are endangered. Students learn about the various species of snakes and their habits, as well as how to be safe in rattlesnake country. Each class will meet Harpoon the resident gopher snake, one of our wild rattlesnakes, and learn about the Nk’Mip rattlesnake research project.
After the program classes are free to tour the centre exhibits and trails.
